How Rihanna Created A $600 Million Fortune And Became The World’s Richest Female Musician

0

»Work, work, work, work, work, work.”

That’s the opening line of Rihanna’s 2016 dancehall anthem titled, appropriately, “Work.” It could also serve as her personal motto.

Famous first as a singer, Robyn Rihanna Fenty, age 31, has since evolved into a style icon and makeup entrepreneur—and soon she’ll be the first black woman in charge of a major luxury fashion house. All those efforts add up to a $600 million fortune, making her the wealthiest female musician in the world, ahead of the likes of Madonna ($570 million), Céline Dion ($450 million) and Beyoncé ($400 million).

Most of that comes not from music but from her partnership with LVMH, the French luxury goods giant run by billionaire Bernard Arnault. Rihanna (pronounced Ri-Ann-ah, not Ri-Ah-nah as she recently clarified) and LVMH co-own the makeup brand Fenty Beauty. It launched in September 2017 at Sephora, another LVMH brand, and online at FentyBeauty.com, quickly becoming a viral success. Fenty Beauty racked up a reported $100 million in sales in its first few weeks, propelled by Rihanna’s fame and 71 million Instagram followers.

The entire personal care industry in America has grown huge in recent years. According to Grand View Research, it could swell to more than $200 billion in sales by 2025, up from closer to $130 billion in 2016. The market saw a record 134 M&A deals last year, including P&G’s $250 million purchase of 10-year-old First Aid Beauty. Perhaps the most telling data point: 11 of the 80 women on Forbes‘ list of the Richest Self-Made Women made their money in beauty or skincare products. Many did what Rihanna did, turn to the low-cost marketing opportunity presented by social media. That works best for existing celebrities, as Kylie Jenner and her Kylie Cosmetics proved out, who can push their new products at their existing followers.

Fenty Beauty has differentiated itself in another way, releasing 40 shades of foundation, far more than the handful of hues sold by other brands. “It challenged the standard convention that you only needed a very defined set of shades to satisfy a market,” says Stephanie Wissink, a research analyst at Jefferies. “Not only did [Fenty Beauty] achieve meaningful sales, but it potentially changed the industry permanently.”

Sales continue to soar. Fenty Beauty generated an estimated $570 million in revenue last year, after only 15 months in business. The entire operation is worth, conservatively, more than $3 billion. Forbes estimates that LVMH owns an estimated 50% of it, while Rihanna has about 15%, a figure a spokesperson for the artist disputed but wouldn’t clarify further. The Barbados native, who overcame hardships including an abusive addict father and a well-publicized assault by then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009, also co-owns the Savage X Fenty lingerie line with Los Angeles-based online fashion firm TechStyle Fashion Group and has millions in earnings from her career touring and releasing as a singer, which make up the rest of her fortune. Her empire continues to grow. In May, LVMH and Rihanna announced Fenty, a new clothing house that will make high-end clothes, shoes, accessories and jewelry.

Cardi B Is Living Her Best Life At Paris Fashion Week

0

Forget the runways, the real attraction for Fashion Month these past couple of days has been Cardi B. She made her return this weekend in an all-leopard outfit (complete with furry glasses) during Milan Fashion Week—and has been serving consistent looks since. For her first Paris Fashion Week appearance, she wore a stunning peacock print Michael Costello gown complete with a matching hat. “I’m Mrs OMG that bitch is shameless,” she captioned the picture on Instagram.

Then, last night, she wore a purple ostrich-esque pantsuit by Christian Cowan for her performance during ETAM’s show. To make it a true lewk, Cardi also matched her hair to the color palette. “Thank you @etam for having me perform at your amazing show tonight!” she wrote on Instagram. “Your lingerie collection was sooo sexy I wanna fuck my man in all the pieces!”

Today, she found her way back to the front row wearing a black blazer and black tie-up bike shorts to the Mugler show.

Tonight (May 7) the 2018 Met Gala took place, and it was a predictably fashionable affair. This year’s theme was Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, so it should come as no surprise that the evening featured plenty of daring looks. Everyone from Katy Perry and Ariana Grande to Rihanna made an appearance at the event at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, Costume Institute, and they all delivered stunning moments.

Complimenting her gold dress and thigh-high boots with a pair of feathered angel wings, Katy was an absolute vision and stayed true to the evening’s religious theme. Similarly, Rihanna and Cardi Bseemed to be channeling papal fashion with their heavily bejeweled gowns and headdresses. Considering that the “Diamonds” siren is always a highlight of the annual gala, her appearance was unsurprisingly perfect. Similarly, Madonna stole the show with her striking look. The Queen of Pop is no stranger to toying with religious imagery, and she draped herself in a black gown complete with a cross shaped cut-out over her chest. Topping things off with a gold crown of crosses and carrying a bouquet of black roses, she added another iconic moment to her growing list of Met Gala appearances.

Ari went in a more arty direction for the evening. Wearing a floor-length painted dress, she topped off her traditional ponytail with a chiffon bow. The “No Tears Left To Cry” diva managed to keep her look light, and it was a sublime moment for her. Selena Gomez also opted for a delicate look. She showed off her sun kissed glow in an airy white gown and paired it with a dramatic smoky eye. Jennifer Lopez and Nicki Minaj meanwhile brought the drama in bold colors. The Queen rapper draped herself in a scarlet wrap while JLo appeared radiant in a jeweled and feathered black gown.

Other notable looks include Zendaya who appeared to channel Joan of Arc in her armor-inspired gown and Troye Sivan. The “Bloom”crooner took a risk by selecting a scarlet suit, which he paired with a sheer undershirt. With his bleached hair in a windswept style, it is surely an unforgettable moment. Miley Cyrus channeled classic Hollywood in her daring black gown, and Nick Jonas similarly kept things a little more understated with a black tuxedo.

15 Black Designer Dresses We Might See at Sunday’s Golden Globes

0

Awards season officially kicks off on Sunday, with the 75th Golden Globe Awards. This year — apart from honoring the best in film and television — the annual ceremony will also be protesting sexual harassment and misconduct in Hollywood in a unique manner.

Many actors and actresses (including Meryl Streep, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone) will be donning black ensembles to stand in solidarity with sexual harassment victims and those who have been treated unfairly in Hollywood. After a slew of sexual misconduct allegations were made public in 2017, women in the entertainment industry are taking a stand and joining forces to make their voices heard.

As the city of stars prepares for the big night, ET is gathering up a handful of designer gowns from the latest collections that could be spotted on the red carpet.

Dior

Among the gowns that will likely make an appearance on the red carpet are artistic director’s Maria Grazia Chiuri’s designs that perfectly capture the essence of a bold and elegant woman who isn’t afraid to say what’s on her mind.

Triple Trouble! Rihanna Shares Three Stunning «Vogue» Covers

0

Rihanna ends another blockbuster year on a highly fashionable note. The pop star lands three (!) Voguecovers, all shot by different photographers. There’s a washed-out, ’70s vibe to Juergen Teller’s cover. RiRi rocks a yellow top with a lemon (fake) fur against vintage wallpaper. She even wraps a towel around her head for a casual touch. Jean-Paul Goude then takes us to the 1980s. His stylish cover recreates his iconic work with Grace Jones — complete with stretched neck and beret.

Equally arresting is Inez & Vinoodh’s ’90s-themed, black-and-white cover. Rihanna channels Naomi Campbell in one of the supermodel’s signature poses. Apart from being a fashion chameleon, the 29-year-old reportedly has the followup to Anti in the can. That means we should be getting new music from her in early 2018. In the meantime, you can quench your RiRi craving by checking out her rap feature (!) on N.E.R.D’s “Lemon.” Check out the superstar’s three Vogue covers below.

Alessandra Ambrosio Reveals The 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Will Be Her Last

0

An Angel is flying away from the catwalk!

Supermodel Alessandra Ambrosio exclusively revealed to ET’s Kevin Frazier that this year’s Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai, China, will be her last.

Ambrosio, 36, broke the news to ET just hours before hitting the VS runway for the last time on Sunday. She has been participating in shows for the last 17 years and is ready to focus her energy on being a mom to her two kids, Anja, 9, and Noah, 5.

Anja traveled to Shanghai to support her mom in her final VS show, and Ambrosio plans to close it out her runway moment by blowing her daughter a kiss from the catwalk.

The Brazilian native wants to spend more time on her successful swimsuit line, «Ale by Alessandra,» and is also looking forward to spending more time on her acting career. She’s currently starring in Daddy’s Home 2.

Ambrosio told ET she expects that final walk to be very emotional, but knows that she and her fellow Angels — aka her «family» — will stay close.

Amal Clooney and Rihanna to Co-Chair 2018 Met Gala With Donatella Versace

Get ready for the Amal Ball!

On Wednesday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced that the co-chairs at next year’s Met Gala will be Amal Clooney, Rihanna, Donatella Versace and, of course, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour. The theme of the star-studded soiree — which is oftentimes referred to as the Fashion Oscars — will be Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, which is sure to inspire some outlandish outfits come the first Monday in May!

«Fashion and religion have long been intertwined, mutually inspiring and informing one another,» says Andrew Bolton, Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, of the theme. «Although this relationship has been complex and sometimes contested, it has produced some of the most inventive and innovative creations in the history of fashion.»

This will be Amal’s second Met Gala. The 39-year-old civil rights lawyer — who welcomed twins earlier this year — first attended with husband George Clooney in 2015, when the theme was China: Through The Looking Glass, and wore a red Maison Margiela “Artisanal” gown created specifically for her by John Galliano.

Amal and George Clooney at 2015 Met Gala

As for Rihanna, she has attended the Met Gala seven times, with her first being in 2007. The 29-year-old pop star still can’t top Versace’s attendance at the annual event. The 62-year-old designer made her debut at the ball in 1995 and has attended a total of 16 times.

At last year’s gala, Rihanna absolutely slayed when she hit the red carpet !

There’s no telling how she’ll top herself this time around!
